Completion of the Siracusa-Gela motorway
CO.SI.GE Scarl chooses custom made formwork for the construction of two viaducts that will improve the viability of the whole basin of southeastern Sicily
The awaited work for the completion of the Syracuse-Gela highway is underway, with the aim to improve the viability of the whole basin of southeastern Sicily in terms of safety, speed and comfort, ensuring greater accessibility to central offices of large industries (petrochemical companies Gela, Priolo and Syracuse) and food companies (the Ragusa agri-food district ). It will take up to four years work to complete, and will be strategic for the local economy network. The construction of the two viaducts of two lanes each, has been awarded to Co.SI.GE. Scarl, a consortium of the Condotte d’Acqua waterworks Co. and the Cosedil Co..
To realize the abutments, plinths, piers and their pier caps, the Italian based construction company Co.Si.Ge. decided to make the most of the Pilosio company expertise in the infrastructure sector for the supply of standard provisional equipment that is combined with custom made pieces created specifically for the site.
Both viaducts, named Scardina and Salvia, have been designed with hollow octagonal piers, with external dimensions of 3.50 x 3.50 m, internal of 2.80 x 2.80 m, at a variable height of up to 14 m, and with pier caps of 5.40 x 4.0 m with a truncated pyramid shape. To construct these elements, Pilosio has designed and built custom made/specialised steel formworks at its factory in Italy, near Venice.
The piers are made by attaching specially made corner elements of modular height to standard P300 panels to adapt to the varying dimensions of the piers; additionally, on the inner side of the pier the custom made formwork used is equipped with a stripping conical corner system to facilitate the stripping and handling operations with a single crane lift.
To install the shuttering, all the piers are equipped with both an external and internal service deck made with MP multidirectional system. The company’s request is to create stacks up to a height of 7m in a single casting, whereas for piers higher than this, work is to be carried out in stages, progressing in height using climbing brackets. 3 modular sets of specially made interior formwork at a total height of 7 m, and two sets of external formwork at a total height of 7m have been supplied .
For the construction of the pier cups the analysis and development of specially made corners and connecting pieces to be combined with P300 standard panels has also been carried out. The pier cup formwork is to be pre-assembled in situ and positioned by crane lift on the supporting structure with climbing brackets placed on piers. For piers of less than 4 m, the pier cup formwork will be placed on a docking system stabilized by ground support props. MP service stair towers of modular height complete the supply.
Abutments and plinths will be cast using the standard P300 system combined with the K 105/180 service decks.
